ISPM15 - Export standard for wooden packaging

Wood packaging material made of unprocessed raw wood is a pathway for the introduction and spread of pests. In Rome, March 2002 the IPPC - the Integrated Pollution Prevention Control Directive introduced an international standard for the treatment and marking af wooden packaging.

ISPM 15 includes a number of rules that take effect only when they are being adopted in the legislation of each country. Consequently, there is no common date for the implementation of ISPM 15.

However, at number of countries have chosen to acknowledge the recommendations of ISPM 15 and others have informed that they plan to adopt it.

As for export it is always the legislation of the recipient country that applies. Concurrently with more and more countries adopting the ISPM 15 for import, the need of the dispatching country to follow the standard is growing.

Marking

The wood is treated and marked according to common standards. In this way the packaging is identifiable no matter where it ends. Except for China, there is no requirement for accompanying documents or health certificate, for packaging from the EU (June 2005).

Only companies, certified for wooden packaging for export purposes are entitled to use the registered international marking.
